Is your website Mobile Friendly? Many website still aren't optimized for mobile devices. Responsive Web Design is a way to build websites to work well on any size device. Responsive Design is coded to shift, organize, and resize itself to fit any size screen. This is important because there are a zillion different screen sizes, and your website should look great on every screen.

Responsive Design vs Static Design

Older website are considered static, they don't adapt to a range of screen sizes. This make it nearly impossible to read web text. Responsive Design resizes everything to fit at the right size no matter what the screen resolution.

How It Works

I've included a diagram below that shows how the responsive web design grid works to move things around. On a desktop screen you have a wide rectangle, but on a smartphone it's a tall rectangle. I chose simple shapes to help you follow where things move. The triangle stays in the top box, while the side by side octagon and square shapes are now stacked on top of each other. Notice how the circle shape that was on the line between the two boxes is now split in half and no longer lines up on the smartphone screen. You have to be conscious of this when designing. Any design elements in between the grid boxes will not render correctly, so designers get creative to work around these constraints.
